Successes

Over the last four years, estimates of Gunung Palung’s orangutan population (2,500 individuals), have remained stable and illegal logging has dramatically decreased. GPOCP is an important reason for these successes, as our work with communities around the national park has increased markedly during this time period. There has also been a tangible shift in local attitudes, with many villagers – particularly students – now taking lead roles in promoting the park’s conservation. However, the threats to Gunung Palung’s orangutans continue to grow, meaning GPOCP’s work is needed now more than ever.
